The Chapel is sited within the grounds of the center at a location known as Cross Point, a prominent peninsula on the lakefront, where an existing 50’ tall steel cross and outdoor area of contemplation exists. The Chapel is organized along an axis that relates not only to the location of the existing cross, but also aligns with the setting sun across the lake’s horizon. The building form emerges from the wooded site towards the cross, the water, and the sky. The plan of the chapel was developed to form a small entry courtyard; service functions are housed in a solid block to buffer sound and views from adjacent properties and create a smaller court within the plan. The overall plan is defined by a collection of L-shaped walls that allow for slotted openings at junctures to provide controlled views and natural light at key intersections of the building.
