Harris County ESD No. 28’s Ponderosa Fire Station No. 62 is a relocation of an existing neighborhood station. The layout for the 11,163 square foot facility is long and lean to fit within the narrow site. The station is designed to withstand 150 mph hurricane winds and features a 9-11 monument and secured employee parking.
From the lobby, the public can contact the lieutenant via pass through window or utilize the training room and restroom facilities for community events. The lobby displays memorabilia and trophies and showcases a life-size bronze firefighter statue. The station has accommodations for eleven firefighters with additional temporary beds for emergencies.
Because the department balances volunteer and career personnel, the sleeping arrangements offer flexibility with a dorm room and three private sleeping rooms. Lockers for volunteers are found in the main corridor and a study room is provided for those working on continuing education.
The three 65 foot deep bays are equipped with an automatic exhaust system, heaters, 3/4” and 2” hose bibbs, and drop-downs for power and compressed air. The station also features quick opening Bi-folding doors which help to decrease response times.
