The Texas A&M Transportation Institute State Headquarters and Research Building consolidates the TTI Administration and provides additional space for the Institute’s growing research programs. The Institute is responsible for multiple research programs in areas of transportation safety, security and effectiveness for all modes of transportation including automobile, rail, pipeline, bicycle and pedestrian. The new building complements the existing adjacent TTI building expanding TTI to almost 100,000 SF within the Research Park area of Texas A&M’s College Station campus.

The new facility is Certified LEED Gold, utilizing combined strategies for energy efficiency, water efficiency, use of recycled and locally obtained materials, improved indoor environmental quality and site development. The building form optimizes opportunities for north light and turns away from the harsh western sun. South facing glazing is screened at the exterior to optimize opportunities for natural daylighting while reducing heat gain from the southern exposure.

The new building frames a courtyard shared by both TTI facilities which includes covered outdoor areas and landscaping for the benefit of the research personnel. The courtyard narrows to the east providing a convenient connection between the two buildings and their complementary facilities including showers and lockers provided for staff use and covered bicycle parking.

Fenestration patterns of vertical punched openings within the masonry exterior respond to the Campus masterplan directives yet provide a unique identity for the Institute as a state agency headquarters. Articulation of the sunscreen with selectively placed openings create an ever changing cascade of shadows enlivening the facade suggesting the movement of transportation.
