As part of the implementation process of the University of Dallas Master Plan, a 9,200 sq. ft. addition to the existing Maher Gymnasium originally designed by O’Neil Ford, Architect was planned to meet the University’s current and future needs. Improvements were made to the existing gymnasium as well as an addition that includes a 3,000 sq. ft. cardio-theater, two locker rooms, faculty offices and team meeting rooms.
Sited on a hillside between the academic mall and the open athletic fields, the Maher Recreation Center establishes a transition zone between the passive and the active areas of the campus. The design of the addition emphasizes this transition through massing and fenestration and remains respectful of the original architecture. Light as a metaphor for activity provides physical and conceptual transparency to the program within the addition and provides an expansive view to the athletic complex.
