The new Westlake | Harris County Fire station is a 6 bay station serving Katy, Texas. This Volunteer department is a part of the ever expanding greater Houston area and required a modern facility to better serve their community.
The first floor of the facility contains all of the public spaces, from administration offices and conference room to a large meeting hall / training room. An entry tower invites visitors in while a sweeping ceiling and a memorabilia case draws the public in towards the meeting room.
The second floor is the private quarters of the fire fighters; features include an open kitchen & dining area, adjacent to a balcony patio and BBQ area. Other unique spaces include a day room with sliding barn doors and separate game room complete with pool and ping-pong tables. The main watch-room overlooks the apparatus bay and contains a Murphy-bed and private restroom allowing for a self-contained control center during emergency operations.
Because the department consist of 74 volunteers and only 24 paid employees it was decided that dorm style bedrooms would best serve their needs. Two separate dorm and shower rooms meet the gender needs of the firefighters, while the connecting hallway is filled with custom lockers for each firefighter.
