Palo Alto Fire Station No. 4

Palo Alto Fire Station No. 4 is a modern replacement facility designed to support emergency response while reinforcing the station’s role as a trusted civic presence. BRW is replacing the original 1953–54 station with a contemporary building that balances operational efficiency, firefighter well-being, and community connection along Middlefield Road.

The design prioritizes readiness and functionality through clear apparatus circulation and well-organized interior spaces. The station supports an engine company and ambulance crew with three apparatus bays, including two drive-through bays that enable rapid response. Interior spaces include individual living quarters, shared day spaces, fitness areas, and a training room available for scheduled public use.

Architecturally, the station uses a contemporary palette of ceramic rainscreen panels, aluminum soffits, formed steel fascia, glass, and stucco. The massing conveys safety, readiness, and refuge, while sustainable strategies, including a photovoltaic micro-grid system and a design targeting LEED Silver certification, support long-term resilience and performance.
