Corpus Christi Fire Station 3

Corpus Christi Fire Station No. 3 serves one of the nation’s busiest EMS response districts, yet for nearly 50 years, its aging facility struggled to meet the demands of modern emergency services. The City of Corpus Christi brought BRW Architects on board to replace it with a station built for the realities of today’s first responders: faster response times, better health protections, and a building tough enough to weather the Gulf Coast’s punishing climate. The result is a contemporary two-story facility designed around three clear goals: improving emergency response, protecting firefighter health, and building long-term resiliency into every detail. 

The site presented real challenges. A compact, irregularly shaped 1.236-acre lot required BRW to think vertically and creatively to fit a full operational program without sacrificing function. The design separates high-exposure areas like apparatus bays and gear storage from living quarters through a deliberate “hot zone” layout, complete with airlocks and decontamination showers to reduce firefighters’ exposure to carcinogens. Translucent wall panels bring in natural light while standing up to hurricane-force winds, and the entire structure is engineered to handle the salt air and high water tables that come with a coastal Texas location. 

Beyond its operational role, the station was designed to be a genuine part of the neighborhood. BRW approached every elevation with the same care, so the building contributes positively to the surrounding community from every angle. A flexible community and training room opens the station up for public education and neighborhood gatherings, while xeriscape landscaping reflects a commitment to local water conservation. Corpus Christi Fire Station No. 3 is more than a replacement facility; it’s a civic landmark built to serve the people who depend on it most.
