Mont Belvieu Fire Station 1

Mont Belvieu had a vision: transform its municipal complex into Riceland Town Center, a vibrant civic and entertainment hub at the heart of the growing city. Fitting a fully operational fire and EMS station into that vision was no small challenge, and it’s where BRW Architects got to work. The result is a 20,001-square-foot facility that serves as a visible civic anchor for the town center while meeting the full operational demands of a modern fire department serving up to 11 personnel per shift.

Designing an emergency response facility inside a high-activity public district required some creative thinking. BRW developed dual pull-through apparatus bays with two distinct exit routes, so crews can reach any part of the city even when festivals or civic events fill the surrounding plaza. A two-story layout keeps residential quarters private on the upper floor while placing all response-critical functions at ground level, and redundant staircases paired with fire poles at opposite ends of the bays mean turnout time stays as short as possible. The station’s relocation also freed up space for a new public plaza between City Hall and the original municipal building, a direct community benefit that came directly from the project.

The building was designed to belong to Mont Belvieu, not just serve it. Arched openings, parapet walls, and a material palette of brick and cast stone connect the station to the character of the historic Texas downtown taking shape around it. A walk-in treatment room off the lobby lets personnel assist community members without opening secure areas of the station, and a training and community room near the entrance supports both department instruction and public programming. Built to withstand 154 mph wind gusts, the station is as resilient as the community it was designed to serve.
